Delighted to make the front page of a local paper who did a piece on the recent photo exhibition in Ballymuns Axis centre..well done to all involved and to my mate Ruth Barry for posing with a photo I shot of her and her daughter Louise!
Memories made in the ‘Mun Monday, 20th February, 2017 7:00pm Story by Jack Gleeson A BRILLIANT exhibition of photographs and words at Axis in Ballymun brought back many memories for locals earlier this month. ‘The Mun’ exhibition celebrated the first 50 years of Ballymun and was made up mainly of photos contributed by local residents, both past and present. Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the first residents moving to Ballymun and it was celebrated with many events including a birthday bash on the Plaza as well as Throwback Thursday and Campervan Sessions. To round off the year, all those who have lived or worked in Ballymun over its half century were invited to be part of an exhibition showcasing local families, friends and magical memories. The Mun is a collection of the photographs contributed as well as stories from participants of the Ballymun Adult Read and Write scheme. Among the memories shared were the making of the 2002 movie ‘Bloody Sunday’, when Ballymun was used to recreate Derry. Also included at the event were old newspaper articles and maps and photos of Ballymun before and after the regeneration. Photographer Jim Leonard, who curated the photos for the exhibition, expressed his delight at being invited to be part of the historic exhibition. “I was honoured to be asked to curate the photography part of this exhibition which houses submissions from regular contributors here which include Michael Keating, Nollaig Kelly, Seamus Kelly, Bob Dixon, Peter O'Doherty and Mary O Connor amongst other Ballymunners and includes photographic memories in black and white and colour stretching back to the 1960s,” he said. Jim also thanked Leigh Hussey, Mark O'Brien and all at Axis Ballymun, with support from Dublin City Council.

Having been playing with moving images a little more over the last while..I had the chance to work with the incredible musician/photographer/painter that is Nina Meyer. Wanting to try and convey an air of peace in this project but still add the movement that I edit into most of my video’s..shot in the bird filled skies of Dublin..the warm waters of Sorrento and the lush forests of Wicklow.  Having been involved a project with artist JR called “Inside Out” which globally made the city walls a canvas and bring work alive, I decided to try and do something like this again. Rather than hire a space and print and frame photos, I have printed a series of work at A0 (33×48 inches) and they are pasted them around Dublin on paper for a limited time only!!This project has been a collaboration with the lovely Rebecca Welch who gave me the extra layer to the image..her “cookies”..a series of words put together to convey emotion in an incredible way. I have a collection of these words and could cover Dublin in photos…which I might. Because of the nature of weather/business and people..this body of work may have a short or long time span (one of the first collection of 5 is still on display in Dublin) so I have started to show these in the city centre. If you see one..take a photo and hash tag a post #cookies where ever you can..the idea of this collection is to make art..make people think and share it. I have added multiple copies of the same piece in different locations and have already received great feedback with I appreciate. Make art and bring it to the people Bob   |
